Are we taught to pray?

Are we taught to pray?
Yes, in many ways. Prayers of praise and worship, prayers of thanksgiving, prayers of repentance, and prayers of intercession.
Abraham, Moses, the prophets, Paul and Jesus all used intercessory prayer.

Intercessory prayer is prayer for others. An intercessor is one who takes the place of another or pleads someone else's case. One study Bible defines intercession as "holy, believing, persevering prayer whereby someone pleads with God on behalf of another or others who desperately need God's intervention."

We are admonished and encouraged to pray for others, particularly those in spiritual or physical needs, for family members, for those hurting and those in authority. We are also advised to pray often and with a "pure heart," according to God's will. We are advised to prayer for ourselves: to forgive others as we hope to be forgiven, as it is in pardoning that we are pardoned. We are even advised to pray for our enemies, those holding grudges against us.

Are we taught to pray?  Nature itself, the great outdoors is everywhere God's Cathedral.  "Be still, and know that I am present…"

Can we ever pray enough? No. Not if we accept the power of faith, the energy of hope, the force of love and the blessing of living with gratitude.  Not if we are aware of the incredible giftedness of our history of living in this country.

Should we not pray for those whose finger is on the trigger today in countless places, gun violence, suicicde and suicide bombings, and everyone in harm's way today?

So, today, let us pray…..in praise, in thanks, in pardoning and in petition for our loved ones and others.

Her Guardian Angel

I clearly remember one prayer from my Catholic education:
"O Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here.
Ever this day be at my side, too light, to guard, to rule and to guide."

My granddaughter, Chloe Bell, age 13, is back in Children's' Hospital in Cincinnati, with a mysterious infection after her bone marrow transplant.

If you have an extra prayer today in your heart, please pray that her guardian angel will light, guard, rule and guide her healing.  Thank you.  Her grandpa.

My saints in heaven

My saints in heaven
Arrogant as this sounds, I should have at least some 20 saints in heaven because of my prayers.
From the 4th grade on, I remember in our Catholic St. Augustine school, being taught that we could earn a plenary indulgence (full release) for souls in purgatory, only on All Souls day, October 31.  We needed only to make a visit to the church, say 6 Our Fathers, Hail Mary's and Glory Be's to release one soul in purgatory to heaven.
Because I was all during this time, sure I was going to hell because of my "bad" (incomplete) confessions, and my unworthy communions, I early knew I would need all the upstairs  help I could possibly get. So, when that opportunity to rescue souls from purgatory rolled around once each year, I was dedicated.  Long after others had left the church, little Bernard was there, coming and going to say those required prayers. I am sure I averaged four to six trips each year for about five years.
Therefore, according to my good Catholic teaching, I am sure today that I have at least 20 souls in heaven due to my prayers, now saints ready to intervene for me and my family.
Today, I ask these saints (there due to my interventions) to look out after my extended family, and along the way plea for mercy for this also gravely wounded one who still, needs grace at every moment.
According to my long ago Catholic teaching, I have a claim. My Guardian Angel agrees.
Thank you, Lord, for my Catholic education. I live differently because of it., today, at four score and six. Praise God.
